Sexual Health Diagnostics and Management
To screen for reproductive issues and help patients manage their sexual health, we may recommend preventive services, such as:
- Pregnancy testing
- Birth control management
- Pap smears
- Mammograms
- STD testing (including HIV testing)
During your visit, we will talk with you about any symptoms you are experiencing, your medical and sexual history, and how these issues may be affecting other areas of your life. Katherine and our team will utilize this information to help identify viable treatment options, if necessary, and assist you in making optimal decisions for your general health and well-being.
Sexual health FAQs
How often should I get a Pap smear?
Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been known to cause cervical cancer. Pap smears are a safe and effective way to catch precancerous changes in a woman’s cervix. It's advisable for all women over 21 to have a Pap smear every three years unless they have been told otherwise by their doctor. Johnson Family Medical can provide further testing and information if there are any abnormal findings.
When should I schedule a mammogram?
A mammogram can be scheduled at any time, but it's most often recommended in women over the age of 40. If there is a family history of breast cancer, you notice lumps in your breasts, or there is discharge from your nipples, you should call to have one immediately. Mammograms are fairly simple procedures, but they should be scheduled every year or two years, depending on your age.
What are the most common symptoms of STDs?
The most common symptoms of STDs are unexplained discharge, sores or bumps, and pain when urinating. If not treated, STDs can cause long-term health issues. This brief list of possible side effects is by no means a complete listing, so if you have concerns about your sexual health, please speak with our healthcare advisors about discrete STD testing.
